Yen Rally to Boost Asian Currencies, Strategists Say

The rally in the yen is set to bolster a number of other Asian currencies based on their relatively high correlations, according to Citigroup Inc. and Barclays Bank Plc. Strategists at both banks note that the Japanese currency's strength tends to spill over into regional peers due to deep trade linkages and synchronized monetary policy expectations across Asia.

Citigroup analysts highlight that currencies like the South Korean won, Taiwan dollar, and Singapore dollar historically move in tandem with the yen during periods of appreciation. The correlation stems from shared export competitiveness dynamics and similar responses to global risk sentiment shifts.

Barclays adds that the yen's advance reflects broader dollar weakness and shifting rate differentials, creating a supportive backdrop for Asian FX. The bank's models suggest a 1% yen gain correlates with 0.3-0.5% appreciation in high-beta Asian currencies. This dynamic could accelerate if the Bank of Japan maintains its current policy stance while the Federal Reserve cuts rates.
