A private equity partner at Weil Gotshal & Manges, Lewis Blakey in London, is set to move to Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, marking the latest exit from the troubled Wall Street law firm, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
Blakey has advised private equity firms including Advent International, Bain Capital and Blackstone Inc. on various deals, according to his profile on Weil's website. Weil said on Wednesday that it would dissolve after a series of partner exits and disagreements over strategy among its top leaders.
A Weil team of 40 staffers focused on private funds in London, led by partners James Bromley and James Sargent, is also in talks over a move to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, the people said, asking not to be identified while discussing private information. A spokesperson for Simpson did not respond to requests for comment, and Gibson Dunn declined to comment. Simpson is also hiring a large finance team from Weil led by partner Tom Richards, Bloomberg previously reported.
"Following a careful review of strategic alternatives, the firm's management committee has recommended to the partnership that the firm pursue an orderly wind-down," a Weil spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. "During the wind-down process over the coming months, the firm will continue serving clients with the dedication and excellence that have defined it."
