Versant Media Group Inc. has agreed to sell its SportsEngine youth-sports platform to PlayMetrics, a competitor backed by private equity firm Genstar Capital, according to people familiar with the matter. The deal marks a consolidation in the fragmented youth sports technology market.

SportsEngine provides registration, scheduling and management tools for youth sports organizations. Versant Media Group, which also owns the Golf Channel and E! entertainment network, acquired SportsEngine as part of its digital sports media strategy. PlayMetrics has been expanding through acquisitions to compete in the youth sports management space.

The transaction reflects continued private equity appetite for sports technology assets. Genstar Capital is building PlayMetrics into a comprehensive platform for youth sports league administration. Bringing together two competing platforms under common ownership could reshape the market for youth sports management software.
