Tyson Foods Inc. said it would close several additional beef plants, the latest sign of the US beefpacking industry’s restructuring amid a prolonged US cattle shortage. The country’s largest meatpacker said it would cease operations at an Illinois beef plant and a Utah case-ready facility, while also pursuing the sale of another beef plant in Washington.

Production at the affected facilities will be absorbed by other plants, the company said in a statement on August 13, 2026. The closures come as US cattle numbers remain historically low, forcing packers to adjust capacity to match supply.

Tyson’s move underscores ongoing consolidation in the beefpacking sector, where shrinking herds and rising feed costs have squeezed margins. The company has already idled several plants in recent years as the industry adapts to a smaller cattle supply.
