Supertanker Diverts via Suez Canal Amid Houthi Threats

An Asia-bound supertanker carrying Saudi oil has exited the Red Sea via the longer Suez Canal route while other vessels continue to risk the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as Houthi threats heighten uncertainty in the region.

The vessel's diversion underscores growing caution among shipowners after repeated attacks on commercial shipping by Yemen-based militants. The Suez Canal passage adds roughly 10 days and significant fuel costs compared to the direct Red Sea transit, but offers relative safety from drone and missile strikes.

Several tankers have maintained the shorter route through the Bab el-Mandeb, calculating that naval patrols and defensive measures provide adequate protection. However, insurance premiums for Red Sea voyages have surged, reflecting heightened risk assessments.

Analysts say the split in routing strategies reflects differing risk appetites and contractual obligations. Charterers with time-sensitive cargoes may accept higher premiums, while others prioritize crew safety and schedule predictability. The situation remains fluid, with any escalation likely to push more traffic toward the Cape of Good Hope alternative.
