Sunbelt Rentals Holdings Inc. made its US stock-market debut on Monday, closing at $73.79 on the New York Stock Exchange, a 3% gain from its London listing price. The equipment rental company, formerly Ashtead Group Plc, is now one of the largest US-listed players in the sector, with Ashtead's shares valued at about £22 billion ($30 billion) before the move.

Investors have been pouring into asset-heavy, capital-intensive businesses that can't be replaced by artificial intelligence, sending the S&P 500 Industrials Index to record highs. This "HALO" trade - "heavy assets, low obsolescence" - has benefited companies that make or move physical goods. Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak + Co., noted that Sunbelt "should act well under the scenario where people are looking for heavy assets."

Sunbelt generates more than 90% of its revenue in North America and sees the US listing as a way to align its investor base with its business. CEO Brendan Horgan emphasized the company's specialty offerings in heavy-duty power generation equipment and complex scaffolding, positioning Sunbelt to benefit from massive construction projects like data centers and infrastructure developments. The move comes as investors shift away from companies vulnerable to AI disruption toward businesses with tangible assets.
