Royal Bank of Canada has hired equity capital markets banker Mariano Gaut from Mizuho Financial Group Inc. to lead the structuring of corporate derivatives and origination of convertible bond deals globally. Gaut will join RBC in January as its New York-based global head of strategic equity solutions within the bank's ECM team, according to a memo reviewed by Bloomberg News. The contents of the memo were confirmed by a representative for the Canadian firm.
In this role, the 25-year-plus banking veteran will work closely with RBC's global equities business, according to the memo from Jim Wolfe, RBC's head of global investment banking capital markets, and Nitin Babbar, its global head of ECM.
Gaut has spent the past decade leading Mizuho's capital markets origination efforts across corporate equity derivatives and equity-linked financings. Prior to that, he was with Citigroup Inc. for about 15 years in roles spanning US, European and South American markets, including a stint working in Tokyo. There, he arranged equity-linked offerings and structured deals for companies, private equity firms, financial institutions and governments.
RBC ranks eighth in Bloomberg's US equity-linked league table and 13th globally this year. The bank has worked on Alphabet Inc.'s sale of $19.3 billion of mandatory convertible preferred stock, along with $2 billion-plus convertible bond sales by Cloudflare Inc., NextEra Energy Inc. and Duke Energy Corp., according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
