Nouriel Roubini Launches Tokenized ETF on Blockchain Despite Crypto Skepticism

Nouriel Roubini, the economist famous for forecasting the 2008 financial crisis and later blasting cryptocurrencies, is placing his Atlas America Fund on the blockchain. The $17 million exchange-traded fund will back a new digital token called USAFi, marking an unexpected pivot for one of Wall Street's most vocal crypto skeptics.

The Atlas America Fund trades on Nasdaq under ticker USAF and holds traditional assets like US Treasuries, gold, and real estate investment trusts. This tokenization initiative reflects a growing trend among financial firms to digitize conventional assets using blockchain technology. USAFi targets international investors and will operate under Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority oversight, with BlackRock-backed Securitize handling the technical infrastructure.

Roubini's shift follows years of calling Bitcoin a 'self-fulfilling bubble' while arguing it fails as both currency and store of value. His new approach involves creating what he terms 'technodollars' - blockchain-based products secured by established assets. The tokenized asset market has surged to approximately $32 billion from $6 billion earlier in 2025, according to rwa.xyz data.

Major institutions including BlackRock and JPMorgan Chase have embraced tokenization as a way to broaden investment access beyond traditional financial gatekeepers. Deepa Raja Carbon of VARA suggests the technology can democratize historically exclusive asset classes. Roubini's embrace of blockchain infrastructure while maintaining his crypto criticism demonstrates how the technology is proving its worth even as speculative digital coins continue facing skepticism.
