Mexico’s top electoral official, Guadalupe Taddei, announced Sunday she will resign to protect the independence of the National Electoral Institute, or INE. She plans to submit her resignation to the lower house of Congress on Oct. 26 following a corruption probe opened by Mexico’s Superior Audit Office into suspected irregularities in election-related supply contracts, including possible conflicts of interest, collusion and diversion of public funds.

The investigation has focused on Taddei’s reported ties to a businessman whose companies secured contracts. She denied wrongdoing, calling some allegations manipulated and unverified, and said any claims should be examined through institutional channels. "The responsibility of organizing elections goes far beyond any individual," Taddei said.

Scrutiny has also extended to other appointments within the INE, with some officials reportedly linked to companies under investigation. No personal wrongdoing by Taddei has been established yet. The constitutionally autonomous institute oversees Mexico’s federal elections, voter registry and campaign financing.

Taddei, who became the first woman to lead the institute in April 2023, said preparations for Mexico’s midterm elections next summer are proceeding as planned.
