Malaysia Seizes Tankers in Illegal Diesel Transfer Crackdown

Malaysia’s maritime authorities detained two tankers and their crews for suspected illegal diesel transfer off Penang. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency seized approximately 800,000 liters of diesel, including about 700,000 liters believed to have been transferred between vessels without authorization, according to Penang maritime director Muhammad Suffi Mohd Ramli.

This operation represents one of the latest crackdowns on illicit fuel activities in Malaysian waters. Ship-to-ship transfers without proper authorization violate maritime regulations and fuel smuggling laws. The detained vessels and crew members are now under investigation as authorities work to determine the full scope of the illegal operation.

The seizure highlights Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to combat fuel smuggling, which costs the government millions in lost tax revenue annually. Maritime enforcement agencies have stepped up patrols and inspections in recent years to prevent unauthorized fuel transfers that often occur in territorial waters.
