Malaysian authorities have detained a former Treasury secretary-general over a probe into mismanagement of Muslim pilgrimage fund Tabung Haji, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. A former chairman of Tabung Haji has also been arrested, the anti-graft agency said late Wednesday on Tik Tok. The agency said it would seek to have both individuals remanded at a magistrates’ court on Thursday.

MACC did not name either individual. The case centers on allegations of financial misconduct within Tabung Haji, a statutory body managing savings and investments for Malaysian Muslims undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage. The arrests follow an ongoing investigation into the fund’s governance and use of public monies, raising concerns about accountability in religious-endowed institutions.
