IEA chief Fatih Birol has proposed a new oil pipeline connecting Iraq's Basra oil fields to Turkey's Mediterranean terminal in Ceyhan, aiming to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for oil transportation. The strategic infrastructure would create an alternative export route for Iraqi crude, potentially reshaping regional energy flows and market dynamics.

The Strait of Hormuz currently serves as a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with a significant portion of Middle Eastern exports passing through this narrow waterway. A Basra-Ceyhan pipeline could offer Iraq greater export flexibility while providing European markets with an alternative supply source, potentially affecting oil pricing and regional power structures.

Turkish newspaper Hürriyet reported the proposal, which comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting energy security. The pipeline concept aligns with broader efforts to diversify energy transportation routes and mitigate risks associated with vulnerable maritime chokepoints, though implementation would face considerable technical and political challenges.
