India Govt to Advance Tax Bill for Global Bond Funds

The administration plans to table the Income Tax Amendment Bill in the lower house next week to replace the ordinance notified early June. The bill would formalise tax cuts for foreign investors buying India’s sovereign debt and is expected to be bipartisan. It requires only a simple majority and can be passed by a voice vote.

Lawmaking has stalled due to student protests that ended with the resignation of India’s education minister, raising doubts about whether key bills will clear the session. An ordinance is a temporary law that must be approved within six months to remain in force. If the bill fails, the government can re‑issue the ordinance to keep the tax cuts for another six months.

A Ministry of Finance spokesperson did not respond. The bill aims to maintain the tax incentives that attract global bond funds to India.
