IMO launches mass evacuation of stranded Middle East crews

International Maritime Organization (IMO) will launch an evacuation of more than 11,000 crew members stranded on vessels in the Middle East, following the United States and Iran’s interim peace agreement. The watchdog secured safety guarantees and has been drafting the operation for months. The operation, coordinated with naval forces, will use chartered vessels to ferry crews to safe ports.

Shipping lines have faced costs as vessels lingered awaiting clearance, with charter rates spiking and some carriers rerouting around the Arabian Sea. The evacuation removes a logistical choke point, allowing tankers and container ships to resume normal schedules. Analysts expect a rebound in regional freight volumes, easing pressure on spot market pricing. Some insurers have already lowered war‑risk premiums in response to the de‑escalation.

By securing the release of thousands of seafarers, the IMO’s move also mitigates reputational risk for shipowners and supports the broader effort to stabilize global energy supplies. With the Hormuz corridor now declared fully open, cargo owners can anticipate smoother transit times and lower demurrage costs, delivering immediate operational financial relief to stakeholders across the industry.
