The IMF’s Executive Board is set to approve the seventh review of Egypt’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the second tranche of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), unlocking $1.774 billion in financing. IMF Executive Director Mohamed Maait said the funds will be transferred within five business days after final approval, expected Thursday in Washington, D.C..

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) will receive the disbursement early next week. The package includes roughly $1.5 billion for the EFF seventh review and about $274 million from the RSF earmarked for environmental and climate projects. Maait noted the exact amount may vary with exchange rates and Special Drawing Rights calculations.

Former Plan and Budget Committee chairman Fakhri al-Feky expects the inflow to boost foreign‑exchange reserves, stabilize the local exchange rate and meet foreign‑debt obligations. Conversely, Cairo University professor Medhat Nafei urged reducing interest on external debt, noting Egypt paid over $8 billion in interest in 2025 alone.

Nafei highlighted that 2025 external‑debt service totaled $33.4 billion, with $25.36 billion principal and $8.06 billion interest — about 24 % of payments went to interest. He added that debt service fell 13.6 % versus 2024, but stressed the need to shift resources from debt servicing to development.
