The Greek government has proposed renewing Yannis Stournaras's term as governor of the Bank of Greece, a move that would extend his tenure to become one of the longest-serving central bank chiefs in the euro area. The proposal follows a meeting between Greek Prime Minister and Stournaras, with government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis announcing the decision.

Stournaras, first appointed in 2014 and renewed in 2020, would serve a third consecutive six-year term if approved. This would make him one of the most senior members of the European Central Bank's Governing Council. Known as an ECB 'dove,' Stournaras has expressed concerns about potential stagflation risks from prolonged conflicts in the Middle East, warning these could force monetary policy shifts.

Prior to leading the central bank, Stournaras served as Greece's finance minister during the height of the country's sovereign debt crisis. His continued leadership signals stability for Greece's monetary policy at a time when the ECB faces complex economic challenges across the eurozone.
