European Energy Exchange AG is in talks with Australian power traders about launching futures products in the volatile market, as the bourse looks to expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
"We have been approached by a number of market participants from Australia, and we are now in a dialogue with them," Steffen Koehler, chief commercial officer of the exchange, said in an interview in Tokyo on Tuesday. He declined to say when they would launch an offering.
Australia has one of the world's most volatile power markets, as aging coal plants are retired and a rapid build-out of renewable energy, particularly rooftop solar, reshapes electricity supply. Wholesale prices frequently turn negative, increasing calls from buyers and sellers for more comprehensive tools, such as futures contracts, to hedge risk.
Power derivatives trading is already gaining traction in Australia. Trading volume for electricity futures and options on the Australian Securities Exchange rose 48% from a year earlier in the fiscal year ended June 2026, according to ASX data.
EEX is seeking to expand into other Asian power markets after gaining a dominant position in Japan, where it accounts for most of electricity futures trading.
