Citadel Securities Reverses Bearish Long Bond Call

Citadel Securities' Frank Flight has reversed his bearish outlook on US long bonds, just one month after warning of a "cruel summer" for investors. In a report released Tuesday, Flight, the firm's head of macro strategy, stated that the balance of risks is now tilted toward a rally. He cited crowded bearish positioning among market participants and improving inflation data as key drivers for the shift. "We now see the asymmetry as skewed towards lower long end yields," Flight wrote.

The pivot marks a significant change from his previous stance, which anticipated continued pain for bond holders through the summer months. The new analysis suggests that the heavy short positioning has created conditions ripe for a short-covering rally, while incoming economic data supports a disinflationary narrative. Citadel Securities, a major market maker and liquidity provider, closely watches flow and positioning dynamics. This update comes as traders reassess the trajectory of Federal Reserve policy and the terminal rate for this tightening cycle.

The move underscores how quickly macro narratives can shift when positioning extremes meet evolving data.
