Generative AI is poised to fundamentally reshape credit trading, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s global head of credit trading Sanjay Jhamna. Speaking at JPMorgan's leveraged-finance conference in Miami, Jhamna explained that credit markets represent the final frontier for automation, with traditional AI models proving inadequate for handling the asset class's unstructured data.

As firms increasingly adopt generative AI, the competitive landscape will shift dramatically. "It will reset who can compete and how they can compete," Jhamna told Bloomberg TV, suggesting that companies embracing the technology will emerge as winners while others fall behind. The technology's impact extends beyond trading efficiency to potentially disrupting business models of software issuers that form a cornerstone of leveraged finance.

Current market dislocations are creating investment opportunities, with Jhamna describing credit as "the asset class of the moment." While AI poses threats to some borrowers through potential consolidation following productivity gains, it also creates opportunities for companies that effectively harness the technology. The banker noted that clients are currently focused on energy prices and rates rather than Middle East tensions, as these factors have more direct relevance to credit markets.
