How the Internet Actually Works: Packets and Devices

Your online request doesn't travel directly to a server. It first breaks into packets, small data segments with headers. These packets are routed through a series of networking devices. Understanding this journey clarifies how emails load and videos stream smoothly.

A local switch directs traffic within your home or office network. Your router then acts as a gateway, moving data between your local network and your internet service provider. Before reaching the wider web, a modem converts digital signals to analog for transmission.

Once online, packets traverse multiple routers. A firewall inspects traffic for security, while a load balancer on the destination network distributes requests across servers. Finally, the server processes your request and sends data back along the same path.
