Graphext: Spanish Startup's 7-Year Data Science Build

Spanish startup Graphext defied Silicon Valley's 'grow fast' mantra. Founders Victoriano Izquierdo and Miguel Cantón spent seven years and 7 million euros perfecting their platform before a major funding push. Their patient strategy focused on building an insurmountable technological moat, centered on Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI).

The founders, computer engineers, started with a Twitter analysis tool called contexto.io. Their vision evolved into a 'Formula 1' data platform using WebAssembly and WebGL to process data directly in the browser. This allows instant exploration of millions of rows, bridging the gap for business analysts who find Excel too basic and coding notebooks too complex.

Graphext operates a hybrid model: a self-service tier for product-led growth and enterprise contracts with corporations like McDonald's and Roche. After years of EU grants, a $4.6 million seed round led by Hoxton Ventures in June 2023 marked its commercial launch. The next challenge is scaling sales while integrating generative AI to make its powerful tool more accessible.
