General Atlantic Revives IPO Plans with Major Banks

General Atlantic has reengaged banks to lead a potential initial public offering, reviving a listing effort that has been years in the making. The firm, which manages about $129bn, has held preliminary meetings with potential investors, though deliberations are ongoing and details could change. JPMorgan, Goldman, and Morgan Stanley are on board, with more banks possibly added.

An IPO would cap a long approach to public markets. Founded by Chuck Feeney in 1980, General Atlantic explored a listing in 2022 and filed confidentially in 2023 before the effort went quiet. A flotation would place the firm alongside alternative asset managers that have gone public recently. Investors have rewarded managers offering exposure across private equity, credit, secondaries, and infrastructure, and General Atlantic's recent expansion into credit and secondaries closes gaps in a franchise historically anchored in growth equity.

The firm employs more than 900 people across 20 countries and has backed companies including Airbnb, Uber, and Shein. General Atlantic also appointed 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic as a global strategic adviser earlier this year.
