Welsh Rugby Union Extends Cardiff Buyout Deadline

The Welsh Rugby Union has granted Ospreys owners Y11 Sport & Media an additional 30 days to negotiate their proposed takeover of Cardiff Rugby. The initial 60-day exclusivity period expired on Wednesday, with the new deadline set for 22 April. This extension comes amid significant turmoil within Welsh rugby governance.

Central Glamorgan Rugby Union successfully called for an extraordinary general meeting where WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood faces a vote of no confidence. The EGM, scheduled for 13 April, will also address how council members are selected for the WRU board. This follows the WRU's controversial plan to reduce professional teams from four to three by June 2027.

The WRU confirmed Y11 as its preferred bidder for Cardiff Rugby on 22 January, with negotiations ongoing since that time. The extension suggests both parties are working toward a deal despite the governance crisis threatening to overshadow the process.
