The Open May Shift Final Round for World Cup Final

The R&A will decide after England's Wednesday semi-final against Argentina whether to move The Open's final round to avoid clashing with a potential World Cup final. If England win at 20:00 BST, they reach Sunday's final for the first time since 1966. Golf at Royal Birkdale is scheduled to finish around 6:40pm, 90 minutes before the football kick-off in New Jersey at 20:00, but a playoff could cause overlap.

R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said there are currently no plans to adjust timings, though a "subtle change" is possible. "We think that gives us time to complete a play-off, if required," he told BBC Sport. Organisers aim to finalise their position within 48 hours, consulting broadcasters and managing on-site crowds safely.

Moving a major championship for a sporting clash would be unusual; schedule changes typically address weather. In 2019, the Masters teed off early to avoid thunderstorms, allowing Tiger Woods to win his fifth Green Jacket. The Open uses a three-hole aggregate playoff followed by sudden death, last needed in 2015 when Zach Johnson prevailed at St Andrews.
