Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment after a 61-run defeat to New Zealand in Colombo. The co-hosts needed a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive but collapsed against a late surge from Mitchell Santner, who smashed 47 off 26 balls.

New Zealand looked vulnerable at 98-6 after 16 overs, but Santner and Cole McConchie's 84-run partnership turned the game. Sri Lanka's bowlers, including Maheesh Theekshana with 3-30, had restricted the Kiwis early, but failed to finish the job. The late onslaught took New Zealand to 168-7, a total that proved too much.

The chase never got going for Sri Lanka, who lost early wickets and were 29-4 by the ninth over. Rachin Ravindra starred with both bat and ball, taking 4-27 while contributing 32 runs. With this loss following their defeat to England, Sri Lanka depart the tournament with a whimper, while New Zealand remain in contention for a fifth semi-final appearance.
