George Russell says Formula 1 would not want to lose Max Verstappen, but he would "understand" if the four-time world champion decided to leave the sport this year. Verstappen has expressed dissatisfaction with the new power units and energy management requirements introduced for the 2025 season.

Russell, who has had a difficult relationship with Verstappen in the past, acknowledged that "Formula 1 is bigger than any driver" but emphasized the sport would not want to lose the Dutch driver. He noted that Verstappen's concerns about the new regulations are influenced by Red Bull's struggles this season, contrasting with the team's dominance in previous years.

The Mercedes driver also highlighted Verstappen's unique position, having achieved what most drivers only dream of with four world championships. Russell suggested that with all major goals accomplished, Verstappen might be drawn to other racing challenges, particularly at the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife. As a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, Russell is involved in ongoing discussions to address driver complaints about the new rules, including reducing lift-and-coast requirements and minimizing speed differentials between cars.
