Russell Misses Argentina Clash as Gray Returns for Scotland

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend confirmed Finn Russell will miss Saturday's Nations Championship opener against Argentina as he recovers from a calf injury that ended his Bath season. The experienced fly-half, 33, hasn't regained full fitness for the Cordoba test at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes. Tom Jordan starts at No. 10 instead, with Fergus Burke providing backup from the bench.

Townsend welcomed back lock Jonny Gray after the second-rower missed this year's Six Nations through injury. Gray joins fellow lock Scott Cummings and prop Pierre Schoeman, who will both earn their 50th caps in a side featuring eight changes from the March defeat to Ireland. Full-back Kyle Rowe, centre Rory Hutchinson and wing Jamie Dobie also come into the starting XV, while Kyle Steyn shifts to the right wing.

"Great for Jonny Gray to be back in the squad," Townsend said, praising the lock's form since moving to Perpignan. "His form's been rewarded with this opportunity." Gregor Hiddleston could make his Scotland debut from the replacements.

The extensive reshuffle reflects Scotland's need to rebuild momentum after a disappointing Six Nations finish. Townsend believes the deeper squad can maintain intensity and cause problems against any world rugby opponent, particularly when executing their game plan effectively in both attack and defence.
