Yiech Pur Biel, who once ran barefoot as a refugee, is making history again by leading the first refugee team at the Youth Olympics in Senegal. After competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of the inaugural refugee team, Biel now serves as Chef de Mission for a six-member squad. He hopes their participation sends a powerful message that refugees still need global support.
The Youth Olympics mark the first Olympic event held in Africa, a continent home to nearly 45 million displaced people — the world’s largest displacement crisis. Biel says the team represents hope for young refugees who have lost motivation or talent, offering them a platform to be seen and heard.
