The London Marathon has shattered its own record, with 1,338,544 people applying through the public ballot for the 2027 event on April 25. This unprecedented demand comfortably exceeds last year's previous high of 1,133,813 applicants, demonstrating the race's continued global appeal among runners of all abilities.

Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, called the numbers "astonishing" and confirmed London as the world's most sought-after marathon. The 2026 edition already set records with 59,830 finishers, cementing its status as the planet's largest annual one-day fundraising event.

These figures reflect a growing running culture and the marathon's power to inspire mass participation. The random draw allocation system ensures fair access across different demographics, supporting the event's mission to get people active regardless of age or ability.

Ballot results arrive in early July, determining which lucky applicants secure their spot on the iconic 26.2-mile course through the capital.
