Former world champion Lizzie Deignan has been appointed sporting director of GB Cycling. In the role she will oversee the road programme through to the LA 2028 Olympic Games, coordinating support for both men and women. The move follows her retirement last July after confirming a third pregnancy, marking a swift return to the sport. She will also liaise with coaches.

Deignan’s résumé includes a 2012 Olympic silver in the women’s road race and the 2015 world title, plus 43 professional wins across classics and stage races. She said she is eager to work with a “strong and talented group of riders” and believes Britain can convert its depth into more rainbow jerseys. Her experience as a rider offers immediate credibility. Her tactical mind remains highly regarded.

Men’s and women’s road lead Matt Brammeier called the appointment “a real coup”, noting Deignan’s recent retirement gives her fresh insight into both GB riders and rivals. He expects her to fine‑tune race‑day tactics and mentor emerging talent. With her at the helm, GB Cycling aims to translate its depth into podium finishes at forthcoming World Championships and the 2028 Olympics.
