IOC Reinstates Belarus, Keeps Russia Banned Over Doping

The International Olympic Committee has lifted its ban on Belarus while maintaining Russia's suspension due to ongoing doping concerns. Belarus's National Olympic Committee is now in good standing and complies with the Olympic Charter, allowing its athletes to compete internationally once again.

Russia remains excluded because the IOC's executive board noted "with concern" recent information that has prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency to investigate the Russian anti-doping system. More than 300 sanctions have been handed to Russian athletes following the seizure of Moscow laboratory data in 2019. The IOC's legal affairs commission continues to review Russia's status.

Other sporting bodies have taken different approaches. The International Paralympic Committee and World Aquatics have already cleared athletes from both countries to compete under their own flags. FIFA president Gianni Infantino suggested in February that football's governing body may also lift its ban on Russia, a move Ukraine's sports minister Matvii Bidnyi described as "irresponsible" and "infantile".
