George Russell warned that Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari now pose a huge threat to Mercedes’ title bid. Hamilton’s first win for the Scuderia in Barcelona lifted him 41 points behind Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, after his Spanish victory, in a season that saw him return to form after a troubled rookie year.

Russell, trailing Hamilton by nine points, praised the Italian star’s recent rally: “It just shows you don’t forget how to drive overnight.” He added that Ferrari’s chassis leads the field, while Mercedes’ engine upgrade will be vital to close the gap and keep the championship at stake for the rest of the year.

Hamilton admitted a 2023 neck injury still affects him, noting daily physiotherapy and injections. He remains focused on winning the next race, saying, “I’m thinking about arriving, not about the championship.” Ferrari’s new engine for Austria offers a step forward but won’t erase Mercedes’ performance gap for the entire season.

Red Bull’s chassis upgrade and Max Verstappen’s hope for a better weekend add pressure to the top four. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso reiterated his loyalty to Aston Martin, pledging to chase a title with or without driving. The season’s battles now hinge on engineering gains and driver resilience for the championship race.
