Grand National 2026: Stats reveal winning horse patterns

BBC Sport has analyzed 25 years of Grand National data to identify patterns that might predict Saturday's winner from the 34-horse field. The analysis reveals that eight winners since 2000 have been priced 33-1 or higher, while the average winning price has been just under 24-1.

The data shows Irish-bred horses dominate with 18 of 24 winners, and trainers from Ireland have claimed seven of the past nine victories. Willie Mullins leads with six top-five finishers in the past decade, while Gordon Elliott has secured four top-five finishes. Age plays a crucial role, with 17 horses immediately ruled out for being either seven or older than 10.

Statistical analysis narrows the field to six potential winners: Monty's Star, Lecky Watson, Three Card Brag, Oscars Brother, Stellar Story, and Captain Cody. These horses meet multiple criteria including official ratings of 146+, career falls of two or fewer, and wins over three miles or more. However, the unpredictable nature of the Grand National means that following your favorite number or silks might serve you just as well as statistical analysis.
