Fitzpatrick Leads Scottish Open as McIlroy Struggles in Fog

Fog wreaked havoc at the Renaissance Club, forcing two suspensions and leaving 22 players unable to finish the third round. Matt Fitzpatrick capitalized on the early start, racing to 12 under with four birdies in seven holes before a bogey at the eighth halted his momentum. He shares the lead with Michael Thorbjornsen, who also completed eight holes.

Rory McIlroy, paired with Fitzpatrick, endured a nightmare eight holes. The world number two carded three bogeys — a three-putt at the third, a chunked iron on the par-three fifth, and a missed putt inside a foot on the par-five seventh — dropping to six under, five shots back. His title defense unraveled in the gloom.

Clubhouse leader Johnny Keefer posted a 64 to sit at 10 under, one clear of Chris Gotterup, Wyndham Clark, and Jordan Smith, all unfinished on the same mark. Scotland's Bob MacIntyre lurks at nine under. Play resumes at 07:00 BST Sunday with the leaders still on the front nine.

McIlroy's short-game collapse turns a winnable tournament into a steep chase. Fitzpatrick's iron play looks sharp, but the unfinished business means Sunday will be a 36-hole grind. Keefer's bogey-free round puts a first PGA Tour win within reach if he handles the morning restart.
