England Eye Rehan Ahmed for T20 Spin Boost

England are considering calling up leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed for their Super 8s clash against New Zealand in Colombo. The 21-year-old, who made history as England's youngest Test player in 2022, hasn't featured in T20 cricket since last September but could be brought in to exploit expected spin-friendly conditions.

Bowling coach Tim Southee expects a challenging pitch after 10 of 15 wickets fell to spin during New Zealand's win over Sri Lanka. Ahmed played ODIs against Sri Lanka last month on the same ground and has been a regular squad member despite limited recent action. He would likely replace a pace bowler, possibly Jamie Overton, if selected.

England's decision comes as they prepare for a potential semi-final berth, having already secured progression with their win over Pakistan. The move reflects their strategy to adapt to local conditions, with Southee noting that seamers can still impact despite the spin-friendly surface. Ahmed's inclusion would give England four frontline spinners alongside Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks.
