ECB probes Stokes, Atkinson after nightclub breach

The England and Wales Cricket Board has opened an inquiry into a nightclub incident that involved captain Ben Stokes and pacer Gus Atkinson after the first Test against New Zealand. The pair were present in the Monday morning hours, breaching the team’s curfew imposed after a series of off‑field complaints. Stokes and Atkinson face scrutiny as England’s victory at Lord’s lifts the series to 1‑0.

England’s off‑field reputation has flared repeatedly. A week earlier, white‑ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, prompting a midnight curfew for all players during the white‑ball tour of Sri Lanka and the T20 World Cup. The curfew remained in force for the Test summer, underscoring the board’s strict stance.

On the field, Atkinson claimed seven wickets, including a 5‑30 haul in the second innings, sealing a 115‑run win. Stokes, however, managed just 12 runs in his first innings and a three‑ball duck in the second. The investigation could see both names omitted from the squad for the Oval Test on 17 June.

ECB said it will inform the Cricket Regulator and release a squad update shortly. The outcome will shape England’s Test strategy and test the board’s commitment to discipline. If Stokes and Atkinson are dropped, the side will look to fresh bowlers and a more cautious batting lineup to maintain momentum.
