British figure skaters Anastasia Vaipan-Law and Luke Digby stumbled in the free skate, finishing seventh at the European Championships in Sheffield. Their fifth-place standing after the short program was overshadowed by errors, including a fall during a throw triple loop. The pair, performing to a medley of popular tracks, struggled with nerves, particularly Vaipan-Law, who faltered on key elements. This disappointing performance ends Britain's medal hopes in pair skating.

The British duo had a promising start, placing fifth in the short program, raising hopes for a medal. However, their free skate performance was marred by mistakes, especially the fall that cost them a medal. This result is a stark contrast to their fifth-place finish at last year's Europeans. The home crowd at Utilita Arena was left disappointed after a strong opening.

Earlier, the event saw the presence of royalty, with Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, in attendance, alongside Olympic gold medalists Robin Cousins and Sir Christopher Dean. The gold medal went to Georgia's Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, who delivered a strong performance despite visa issues. It was a successful day for Georgia, with Nika Egadze leading the men's short program, coached by the controversial Eteri Tutberidze.

The event also featured British champion Edward Appleby, who narrowly advanced to the men's free skate despite a mistake in his routine. Appleby, a future prospect for the Winter Olympics, survived on the errors of others, including France's Kevin Aymoz. The 21-year-old will compete in Milan next month, representing Britain's hopes in figure skating.
