Brier Slams Commonwealth Games Deadline

Hannah Brier, Wales' fastest woman, has criticized Commonwealth Games selection deadlines after missing out despite running the required B standard of 23.07. The Swansea Harrier, who also holds the Welsh 100m record, broke the national 200m record previously set in 1982, yet failed to qualify because Team Wales policy requires athletes to beat, not just match, qualifying marks.

"It's very difficult for us Welsh athletes because we almost have to come out with our absolute A-game in April or May which is crazy when the championships are in August," Brier told BBC Sport Wales. Welsh Athletics CEO James Williams called the situation "hugely frustrating," noting they raised concerns about the early deadline with Team Wales last March.

Team Wales chair Gareth Davies defended their policy, stating they do not comment on individual cases. The inconsistency in UK timing standards - with Welsh athletes having less time than those from Scotland and England - remains a point of contention. Brier, who competed at her first Commonwealth Games at 16, expressed disappointment at missing her final appearance despite being medal-contending form.
