The Canadian Grand Prix turned the 2026 title fight into a decisive showdown. Kimi Antonelli clinched his fourth straight victory, handing him a 43‑point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell in the drivers’ standings. A damp, cold circuit forced McLaren to start on dry tyres in wet conditions, but Antonelli’s pace proved unassailable throughout the race and secured the win, and dominated the podium ceremony with confidence.

Russell’s car failed after 30 laps, ending his challenge and promoting Antonelli to the top step. The two had swapped positions repeatedly, their tyres freezing on the cold surface and locking at the hairpin. Team boss Toto Wolff warned both drivers after a chicane lock‑up, fearing a double retirement could jeopardise Mercedes’ championship hopes for both drivers and the team.

Wolff praised Russell’s resilience, saying the Briton had overcome “adversity from karting to F1” and would not abandon the fight with 17 races remaining. Antonelli described the duel as “really fun, really close,” while Russell vowed to enjoy each race and chase wins. The points swing now puts Antonelli firmly in control of the title race for the season.
