Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli entered the Catalunya Grand Prix with a commanding championship lead after just six races. He finished last season seventh, 169 points behind George Russell, but this year he has already secured multiple wins and a podium in Canada. Antonelli says the experience of a full F1 year has erased the self‑doubt that plagued him in 2023 and confidence to race.

Reflecting on his progress, Antonelli highlighted a 5‑4 qualifying edge over Russell, averaging 0.11 seconds per session. He credited better track‑evolution knowledge and energy management for tighter lap times, noting that Russell’s recent pit‑stop error in Monaco and a penalty have narrowed the gap. The Briton’s two Grand Prix victories this season contrast with Antonelli’s single podium, underscoring the rivalry for the team.

Two‑time champion Fernando Alonso called Antonelli “an incredible talent” and praised his composure while leading a dominant car. Antonelli insists the title chase does not distract him; he prefers to focus on the weekend process and enjoy the speed. With the lead intact, he aims to convert his advantage into a championship, leaving little room for doubt and prove his mettle worldwide this season.
