Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has apologized to supporters following his team's humbling 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City. The Netherlands defender acknowledged Liverpool "gave up" during the second half of Saturday's match at Etihad Stadium, effectively ending their hopes of domestic silverware this season.

City dismantled Liverpool in an 18-minute period spanning halftime, scoring twice either side of the break after an evenly matched opening 30 minutes. The defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's side with only the Champions League as their realistic chance of winning a trophy in what has become an increasingly difficult campaign.

"I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half," van Dijk admitted. "The way we played must hurt for everyone. We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager." The captain's rare public criticism reflects the depth of frustration within the squad after their worst performance of the season.
