Uefa Calls VAR Summit to Address 'Microscopic' Ref Calls

Uefa is bringing together Europe's top leagues for a summit to address concerns over video assistant referee technology. The meeting will include referee chiefs from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 to discuss resetting VAR to its intended purpose of intervening only in the clearest errors.

Uefa's head of referees Roberto Rosetti called for the meeting after criticizing what he called 'microscopic' VAR interventions. He argued that VAR has strayed from its original purpose, particularly in subjective decisions. The summit will examine how different leagues apply VAR thresholds and aim to establish more consistent standards across European football.

The meeting comes amid growing controversy over VAR decisions, with intervention rates varying significantly across leagues. The Premier League has the lowest rate at 0.275 per game, while Serie A and Ligue 1 see nearly twice as many interventions. Uefa also wants leagues to adopt a unified technical language to address inconsistencies in applying laws like handball.
