Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert expressed his "hurt" over the "Spygate" scandal that led to the club's expulsion from the Championship play-offs last season. The club admitted to spying on three teams, including Middlesbrough, their play-off semi-final opponents, resulting in Middlesbrough's reinstatement and Southampton starting the new season on minus-four points.

Eckert acknowledged his responsibility for authorizing the actions, stating, "I am responsible and I apologise for bad judgement." He noted the ongoing investigation by the Football Association (FA), which could lead to individual punishments and bans, distinct from the EFL's actions. Despite this, Eckert emphasized the team's focus on preparing for the upcoming season.

Southampton owner Dragan Solak has publicly supported Eckert, stating he will not sack the coach. Eckert described the owner's backing as "humbling and massive," highlighting the trust built between them. He recognized the need for the club to be "stronger than ever" internally and to improve on the pitch, aiming to put the past behind them as they prepare for their opening fixture against Watford on 16 August.
