Switzerland's Embolo Cleared for World Cup 2026 US Travel After Visa Delay

Switzerland forward Breel Embolo has received final approval for his ESTA travel authorization, allowing him to join the national team's World Cup preparations in the United States. The 29-year-old was initially left behind when the squad departed on Tuesday after his travel documents were flagged for review.

Embolo's authorization was delayed due to a 2018 incident in Basel that led to his 2023 conviction for making threats, resulting in a suspended fine. After his appeal was rejected in April, Swiss media reported he chose not to pursue the case further at the Federal Court level. The Stade Rennais striker attended a mandatory appointment at the US Embassy in Bern on Wednesday before receiving clearance.

With 23 goals in 85 appearances for Switzerland and previous World Cup experience from 2018 and 2022 tournaments, Embolo provides attacking depth for the Swiss squad. Switzerland will base themselves in San Diego ahead of their Group B opener against Qatar on June 13 in Santa Clara, followed by matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and co-hosts Canada.

The resolution removes a potential roster complication for Switzerland's World Cup campaign, ensuring coach Murat Yakin has access to all selected players for their opening group stage matches.
