A 45-year-old Gateshead resident was arrested Tuesday following allegations of racially abusing Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park. Northumbria Police confirmed the arrest under a racially aggravated public order charge, with the suspect released on bail. The incident occurred March 22 when referee Anthony Taylor halted Newcastle United's Premier League match against Sunderland for three minutes in the 52nd minute, after Geertruida reported crowd harassment.

Match footage showed Newcastle's Sven Botman receiving treatment while Xhaka approached the official to escalate concerns.
