Rapper Storm Stormzy’s production arm, Merky Films, has signed on to co‑produce a feature film chronicling the early life of former Arsenal striker and pundit Ian Wright. The biopic will trace Wright’s rise from a turbulent Woolwich childhood to his breakthrough professional contract, spotlighting the resilience that propelled him to become one of Arsenal’s all‑time top scorers for cinemas worldwide.

Wright’s story, shaped by rejection from clubs such as Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion, will feature his schoolteacher Sydney Pigden, the mentor who taught him literacy and belief. Producers say the film will culminate when Wright finally attracts a professional offer, forcing him to decide whether to take the leap into top‑flight football and highlight the systemic barriers he overcame.

Stormzy, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, will serve as executive producer, stressing that Wright’s journey transcends sport and speaks to family, perseverance and self‑belief. With Wright’s post‑retirement work on BBC World Cup coverage, Match of the Day and recent six‑a‑side ventures, the movie aims to cement his cultural impact beyond the pitch and inspire future generations of players.
