London City Lionesses have completed one of women's football's most significant transfers, signing Alexia Putellas on a three-year free transfer after her 14-year tenure at Barcelona. The 32-year-old Spain midfielder, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, amassed 38 trophies with the Catalan giants including 10 league titles and four Champions League crowns, scoring a club-record 232 goals in 507 appearances.

Putellas captained Barcelona to another European title in her final season while London City finished sixth in their debut Women's Super League campaign. The World Cup winner with Spain in 2023 and Euro 2025 finalist missed the 2022 Euros due to an ACL injury but returned to peak form, earning back-to-back Ballons d'Or in 2021 and 2022. She chose London City over Boston Legacy, citing the club's women-only independent structure and owner Michele Kang's vision.

Kang, a US billionaire, has invested heavily in training facilities, medical research, and staffing since acquiring the club. London City were celebrating promotion from the second tier just 12 months ago; now they field arguably the game's greatest active player. Putellas is believed to be the club's highest-paid athlete and her arrival is projected to drive substantial attendance and sponsorship growth across the WSL.

This signing accelerates London City's trajectory from promotion side to genuine European contenders. Kang's financial muscle combined with Putellas' elite mentorship threatens to disrupt the established WSL hierarchy, forcing rivals to respond to a club rapidly closing the gap on the league's traditional powers.
