Micah Richards paid tribute to his father Lincoln on Instagram after the former England defender died shortly before the BBC pundit went on air for the World Cup semi-final against Argentina. England lost 2-1.

Richards, a former Manchester City, Aston Villa and Fiorentina right-back born in Leeds who won 13 caps for England, wrote that his father "was my greatest fan" and "barely missed a game my entire life." He described Lincoln as a proud Yorkshireman who would take him wherever he needed to go as a child.

Despite the devastating news, Richards continued with the BBC One broadcast, saying: "I know, particularly as a proud old-school Yorkshireman, dad would've wanted the show to go on this evening. And so it did." He concluded by remembering his father as his "hero and inspiration" while thinking of his siblings and wider family.
