McBurnie: Hull Hero, Scotland Snub

Oli McBurnie became Hull City's Wembley hero, scoring a dramatic 95th-minute winner against Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final. The 29-year-old striker pounced on a goalkeeper error to secure promotion to the Premier League for the Tigers after a decade away from English football's top flight.

McBurnie's match-winning performance came just four days after Scotland boss Steve Clarke omitted him from the World Cup squad. Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic expressed relief, stating McBurnie can now rest during the tournament. The striker accepts the decision, joking he'll support his international teammates "somewhere warm with a beer."

The Leeds-born forward's Hull move followed relegation from La Liga with Las Palmas. Previously, he scored 22 goals in 58 appearances for Swansea before a £20m move to Sheffield United in 2019. Jakirovic admits McBurnie would likely still be at Sheffield United had former boss Chris Wilder remained in charge. Hull's promotion now gives McBurnie the Premier League stage he craves.
