Arsenal teenager Max Dowman scored twice in a 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, but boss Mikel Arteta warned against rushing his development. The 16-year-old has been benched this season until now.

Arteta said: "He is 16 years old and we have to be really cautious. We don't want to stop him... but we need to develop him." Dowman's first goal was a solo effort, leaving defenders on the floor. His second showed composure into the bottom corner.

He is the second 16-year-old to score two goals in a game for a Premier League side in any competition, after Wayne Rooney for Everton against Wrexham in 2002. Arteta added: "He's an unbelievable player because of the character... It's not easy [to contain the hype], but we have to look after him."

Dowman broke records last season: youngest Champions League player (15), Arsenal's youngest starter, and the Premier League's youngest starter, goalscorer and title winner. He scored once in 13 appearances, a goal voted Arsenal's goal of the season. He received his GCSEs from Brentwood School in the summer.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said: "He is a wonderful player... just give him time." Teammate Mikel Merino added: "He's an unbelievable talent... He will be a star in the future." Arsenal have won all seven games this season.
